European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has declared that the EU has had to reduce energy dependence on Russia.
Borrell, during a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, has said the EU has spent 35 billion euros (29 billion euros) on Russian fuel since the beginning of the war, compared to a cost of only 1 billion euros to Ukraine in arms.
We must help [Ukrains] protect... We have given Ukraine one billion euros. It may seem a lot, but one billion euros is what we pay Putin every day for energy giving us”, he said before the Eurodeputs, CNN reports.
His remarks come after the EU ambassadors meet to review a fifth round of sanctions against Moscow, including a ban on Russian coal imports.
“Today we end coal, but it's only a small part of the @x1> bill, he stressed.
European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyeen has said the EU is “works” for additional measures, including restrictions on oil imports.
