The latest measure is in response to the mass killings of civilians in Butcha, Ukraine, which has received international condemnation, writes Sky News, Pryscopi explains.
The US believes that many of the Russian president's assets are hidden from family members.
Sanctions will also target Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's wife and daughter.
The sentences will disrupt all close members of Putin's family from the US financial system and freeze any assets they hold in the United States.
The official said that if Putin were to change course in Ukraine, US sanctions could potentially slow down and perhaps return.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden will sign an executive order banning new investments in Russia.
