Cabrera told CNN network that her son, Willy Joseph Kencell, 22, was killed Monday while working for a military contractor company that sent her to Ukraine.
Cabrera said her son was working as a prison officer in Tennessee and was registered to work with the private military contractor shortly before fighting in Ukraine in late February. She told CNN that he agreed to go to Ukraine.
He wanted to go because he believed in what Ukraine was fighting for and wanted to be part of it to keep the evil of the war there, so he wouldn't come here, and that maybe our American soldiers should not be involved in it”, she said.
Cabrera said her son's body was not yet found.
“did not find his body,” she said. “Those with him are trying, but either they would pull his body or they would be killed. We would like his body to return to us”, said Mrs. Cabrera.
She said her son flew to Poland on March 12th and entered Ukraine shortly after that date. She said he was fighting alongside volunteers from a number of countries.
The United States has not confirmed the reports. On Friday, the State Department said it was aware of the reports and that it is terminating the situation closely. Because of the privacy conditions, we have no further comments. We repeat once again that American citizens should not travel to Ukraine because of active armed conflict and exclusion of American citizens in Ukraine from Russian government security officials, and that American citizens in Ukraine should leave immediately if it is safe to do so using some option of commercial or private land transportation. ”
The widow of the late Kencell, British Cancell, told the Fox News network that he left behind a young boy and that she considers her husband a hero.
My husband died in Ukraine,” said British Cancell. He went there trying to help people, as he always felt this was his main mission in life”.
She said her husband volunteered to go to Ukraine, but also had aspirations to become a police officer or a fireman.
“He had dreams and aspirations to be a police officer or to join the New York police force,” she told Fox network.
