The chances have increased that North Korea will soon test a nuclear weapon for the first time since 2017, as a sign to improve its arsenal and increase political pressure, analysts from the United States and South Korea have said, Reuters records Periscope.
Two American officials told Reuters there are indicators that Penian may be preparing for a certain test, including activity near the Punggy nuclear station, even though the exact time is not yet right.
A military official from South Korea confirmed that they are attending the event to restore a tunnel used for nuclear testing.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby has refused to comment on it this week, but said Washington is concerned about the possibility of new testing because they would be opportunities for North Korea to enrich its arsenal.
Whenever you test, you learn... We know this is a programme they want to improve”, he said February. “and, of course, we're worried about trying to do that”, Kirby added.
The Analyses say numerous tests can help North Korea achieve its state goal of producing small nuclear heads and improving their credibility.
A resumption of nuclear tests could send political unrest to the region. China and Russia had joined the United States and other members of the United Nations in sanctioning Penian to preliminary tests, but in moments after flying the intercstrian ballistic missile in the past week, Beijing and Moscow have shown objections to any new extent and said sanctions should be eased.
