A total of 1,924 dead or missing have been reported on roads from North Africa along the Mediterranean, as well as 1,153 between the West African coasts and the Spanish Canary Islands, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said.
The number of dead and missing is twice as much as last year, a UNHCR spokeswoman in Geneva said on Friday.

The organisation wants to protect refugees and other migrants along refugee routes from exploitation and trafficking of human beings. It is demanding $160.5m in donations from governments for programmes in 25 countries.
