Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, through a video connection, addressed the Israeli Parliament.
Ukraine's president drew parallels between the Russian occupation of Ukraine and World War II. He said this “was not a military operation”.
This is a large-scale war intended to destroy our people, destroy our children, our families, citizenship, cities, cultures and everything that makes them Ukrainians. That's why I have the right to do this parallel in history. Our struggle for survival and World War II”, he said.
He has previously spoken with other lawmakers around the world including the United Kingdom and the United States seeking support.
Zelensky told Israeli lawmakers that the Nazi Party (Nationalsosiisticsche Deutsche Arbeiterpartei NSDAP) was established in Germany 102 years ago, on February 24, 1920, and on the same date this year, Russia invaded Ukraine.
They're again saying these words: “final resolution” ) referring to us, the Ukrainian people... this was said at the meeting in Moscow”, said Zelensky, who is Jewish.
“Final selection” (Endlösung) is the name of the Nazi plan for systematic genocide against European Jews, which led to the latest, most deadly phase of the Holocaust (Shoh). Some of Zelensky's relatives were killed in Holocaust.
He urged Israel to help the Ukrainian people in their resistance to the Russian army.
He also questioned Israel's reluctance to sell his defence system to Ukraine “
“Everyone knows that your missile defence systems are the best and that you can eventually help our people, save the lives of Ukrainian, Ukrainian Jews”, he said.
“We can ask ourselves why we cannot take arms from you, why Israel has not imposed strong sanctions on Russia or is not putting pressure on Russian business. In any case, the choice is yours, brothers and sisters and then you have to live with your answer”, he stressed.
Zelensky also quoted late Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in his message “as saying, but our neighbours want to see us dead”.
“We remain, ready for compromise”, he added, drawing a direct parallel between today's Ukraine and historic Israel, faced with Arab hostility. / REL
