The Russian invasion quickly prompted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to declare support for Ukraine. He also increased German defence spending and sent weapons to Ukraine.

Polls suggest that many Germans support Zelensky's call for the Russian power ban, but oil ministers have said the gradual removal of Russian gas use will not be immediate. However, there is already a plan to stop the import of Russian coal.
