Pauly was deputy commander of Russia's Black Sea fleet and is believed to be the first navy officer to have been killed during Ukraine's Russian holiday, which has started on 24 February.
On Saturday, March 19th, Kiev also claimed to have killed Lieutenant General Andrei Mordwickev, who is the highest Russian general reportedly killed in the war in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Ukraine's General Staff has also claimed that 14,700 Russian troops were killed in the 25-day war.
