The known application, TikTok, says it is suspending direct transmission and new content in Russia, while considering the implications of the security of a new law threatening to imprison anyone who authorities think has spread false news “” to the armed forces.
The BBC platform says its message service within the app will not be affected.
“We will continue to evaluate the developing circumstances in Russia to determine when we can fully resume our security services as our top priority”, the company says.
There are about 70 million TikTok monthly users in Russia, but developers there have launched a rival service.
A number of international media organisations have suspended their work in Russia, citing concerns about the safety of their workers with the new law.
These include the BBC, Bloomberg News, Canada's CBC, German public broadcaster ARD and ZDF and Italy's Rai, among other things.
Meanwhile, the Russian government has banned Facebook entry.
