US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said the invasion of Russian President Vladimir Putin includes not only the attack on Ukraine, but also “the attack on principles essentially transatlantic security”.
Austin called the war in Ukraine “War selected by Putin” during the opening speech at the Pentagon today prior to a meeting with German Defence Minister Christine Lambricht.
Putin's chosen “war has caused a terrible tax on civilian victims and has forced millions of innocent Ukrainians to flee their country”, he said.
Austin thanked Germany for working with the US to deploy forces “and through Germany in recent months”, as part of the US's increased security presence in Europe. He also said he welcomes Germany's decision to spend 2% of its “economic production for defence”.
“S together, we send a clear message and that message is that any challenge to our security will have a strong and unified response. And our commitment to NATO's collective defence is iron, “said Austin.
