spokeswoman Kate Beddingfield said the US has information that Putin is deceived by the Russian Army by bringing continued tension between him and the military leadership.
Putin's “War has been a strategic error and has left Russia weaker in the long term and isolated it from the world”, she said.
The Kremlin has not yet made a comment on this claim, reports the BBC.
The British intelligence service reports that Russian troops in Ukraine are very demoralised because of equipment shortages and are refusing to take orders.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby says that no notice of Putin can lead to fruitless Russian-Ukrainian negotiations.
Negotiations between the two countries are expected to begin on 1 April, according to Ukrainian negotiator David Arakhamia.
