Papa: More weapons are not a long-term solution to the war in Ukraine

Pope Francis stated today that the war in Ukraine has shown that humanity must reject the strange instinct of “collapse” and that buying more weapons is not the ultimate solution to any conflict. Francescu urged participants in his general weekly audience to remember all victims of the war -- including the “soldiers fallen on one side or the other”, the wounded, the homeless and refugees.
May God send his soul to understand that war is mankind's defeat, that we must defeat all those who wage war”, he said.
“War is a need that destroys us,” he said, praying to God that “rids us of this need for self-destruct”.
This is the second time since the beginning of the war in Ukraine that the Pope sparked a feeling of nuclear war.
Francescu has strongly condemned the war several times, but has criticised Russia only in a significant way, thus far avoiding the mention of the country's name.
He used terms as unjustified aggression, massacres and atrocities.
Let us pray that those in power understand that buying and producing weapons are not the solution to the problem. The solution is to work together for peace, as the Bible says, to turn weapons into instruments of peace,” said Pope Francis.
Francescu has said in the past that the budget spent on weapons should be relaunched for other purposes, such as combating world hunger and developing and distributing vaccines. He also called for the ban on nuclear weapons, saying even keeping them for prevention is immoral.
