Albright was a central figure in President Bill Clinton's administration, first served as US ambassador to the United Nations before becoming the country's top diplomat in its second term. It defended NATO enlargement, prompted the alliance to intervene in the Balkans to prevent genocide and ethnic cleansing, tried to reduce the spread of nuclear weapons and defended human rights and democracy across the globe.
