Police have visited the family earlier because of their husband's personal problems.
Florian Schweider, media spokesman for St. Cantonal Police. Gallen, comment on the case.
Kosovar had reported to the canton's emergency call centre early Saturday morning that he had just hurt his wife severely, broadcast albinfo.ch. When police arrived at the apartment, the 32-year-old woman, also Kosovar, had already passed away.
St. Gallen has arrested her husband; he is in custody.
The precise motives and circumstances of the crime are still unclear. Police say no firearms were used in the crime.
The spokesman says the police had to go to the couple's apartment in recent days because of personal problems, albinfo.ch records. There were three children living in the same family, but it is not known whether they heard anything about crime, writes Tagblat.ch. Currently, they are in the care of the family environment.
Two of the three children, aged 14 months to 17, are the couple's own children. The third is a child from the wider family environment that lives with his family.
Asked about the eventual violence in the affected family, Schweider says: Police never had to go to the apartment in question because of domestic violence, but only because of their husband's personal problems.
Many things happen behind closed doors that police cannot see. If this is about domestic violence that has resulted in death, then this motive will also be one of the subjects of the ongoing investigation, St Gallen's Canton Police spokesman says in part.
