Serbia is attempting to get closer to US”, Spahiu appeal to institutions: Renew contacts with Congress

Former Kosovo Ambassador to the US Avni Spahiu urges institutional leaders to empower Albanian diplomacy and lobby in America to renew contacts with Congress in Washington. After the letter of 16 US Congress members to President Beiden in support of Serbia, Spahiu says the latter is trying to approach [...]
He for Kosovo Press says the institutions in Kosovo have long not worked properly with the US.
I still think our leadership should make more frequent visits to America and especially renew contacts with the American Congress to convince Congress of the truth with Serbia that it has made in the past. Since there were many half-truths and lies which Serbia is called in relation to America, when we know Serbia has had a role in the past. It has been (formerly) Yugoslavia that has developed relations with America and not Serbia, since it was only one of the republics. There were a lot of lies that only takes credit for convincing congressmen, but also the Biden administration that Serbia is the one in the region to be supported. I think we need to be careful in this regard and work because lasting friendship is strengthened and continues to exist until we nurture that friendship. Keeping a friend takes a lot of work and continuous. We can't say we have America's support and we have to work with it because it understands itself. No, we should be close there and not make mistakes”, he says.
Spahiu also considers the activism of the Serbian lobby in the US disturbing and the tendency to approach President Biden.
“Despite the fact that Serbia has been bombed by the US and NATO in the case of its aggression in Kosovo, the current Serbian government is making extraordinary efforts to approach the American administration. Indeed, there is an open race for all Western Balkan countries to form alliances or friendships with the US. It is just a reflection, previously the Serbian president himself stayed in Washington and has demanded that there be friendly and geostrategic reports with the United States of America. This is just one example of what I said. A Serb lobby in Washington has been established at the U.S. Congress more precisely and is acting actively by drawing the stance and benefiting the goodwill of the Biden administration towards Serbia, claiming to be a natural ally of the US. Even before, there was a lobby that was completely powerless against the Albanian lobby in Congress. He was very active during the 1880s, but even after declaring independence, after we had some friends in Congress”, Spahiu said.
Consequently, according to him, Kosovo diplomacy has to change access and commit much to providing other lobbying figures for Kosovo in the US.
We haven't worked properly with the United States in a relatively long time. I'm not just talking about these foreign affairs carriers who are current, but a long time ago we've neglected a lot of things. Even working with Congress considering that some of our friends like Eliot Engel and others are not. We haven't made the right effort, I'm saying small efforts maybe, but enough effort to provide other figures within the framework of the Albanian lobby at the American congress. I think it also belongs to the Albanian-American community, who have done so much in the past by working with Congress, to now try to recruit new congressmen who would deal with the Kosovo issue and support the new state of Kosovo”, he adds.
As for the possibilities that drag on Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, to change in US access to Kosovo, Spahiu says such a thing does not stand. Therefore, according to him in the dialogue with Serbia, Kosovo should look at its own interests and not accept compromises.
“We need to go to our interests as far as dialogue is concerned, not to accept unnecessary compromises as we have done in the past, to see what can be done, what cannot be allowed if it is little harmful to Kosovo should not become”, he declares.
Days ago, Serbian Ambassador to Washington Marko Djuric made public a letter from 16 members of the US Congress to President Biden in Serbia's support.
Meanwhile during the day, former Kosovo Assembly President Faton Bislim wrote to 16 American congressers, where he asked them to withdraw the signing, reminding them of Albanians' loyalty to Americans at different historical times, while Serbia's actions that have been against the United States and Russia.
