Jaylen Smith, was elected mayor of Earle in Tuesday's runoff, winning 235 votes to 183 of Nemi Matthews, according to the results, CNN reports.
I didn't run to make a name for myself,” Smith told CNN on Wednesday. “I ran because I wanted to help my community and take it to a higher level”.
He is among the youngest mayors of elected municipalities in the United States and would be the youngest member of the Association of African-American Mayors.
