Australian scientists say they have discovered an unknown scrolling object on the Milky Way, which they say they have never seen before.
The facility was first discovered by a university student ? has been set to issue radio waves every 18 minutes.
But researchers say that something that turns on for a minute is very unusual. The team is working on understanding more.
Objects that start and disappear in the universe are not new to scientists. But an object that released waves for a full minute was very strange.
Theories about what the object might be include a neutron star or a white dwarf a term used for the remains of a collapsed star. Most of the discovery, however, remains a mystery.
More discoveries would tell astronomers whether this was a rare single event or a large new population we had never noticed before, said Dr. Hurley-Walker.
I can only expect to understand this object and then extend the search to find more. ”
