When the Coronervirus began spreading throughout the world, Kiribati's faraway Archipelago closed its borders, making sure that the disease did not reach its shores for almost two years.
Kiribati finally began reopening this month, allowing the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Days Saints to rent a plane to bring home 54 of the island nation's citizens.

More than half of the passengers tested positive for the virus, which has now pushed the government to declare a disaster situation. 36 initial positive cases from flying had increased to 181 cases by Friday.
Kiribati and several other small Pacific countries were among the last countries on plans that have avoided the outbreak of the virus, thanks to their distant locations and strict border controls.
