According to foreign media, the attack, in the Al-Rashad region about 65 miles (40 km) south of the town of Kerkêkê, occurred shortly after midnight. “Organization members I SIS targeted a federal police checkpoint,” said a senior Iraqi police officer.
“Thirteen were killed and three wounded between security forces”, the officer added.
The ISIS seized parts of Iraq in a lightning offensive in 2014, before being defeated by a campaign against the uprising supported by a US-led military coalition.
The Iraqi government declared the Sunniate extremists defeated at the end of 2017, but they hold sleeping cells that continue to strike security forces with asymmetrical attacks.
