As many as 200 citizens and thousands of allies have been left behind, facing a nightmare under the Taliban, who celebrate America's withdrawal from the 20-year war with weapons and fireworks.
General Kenneth F. McKenzie said the last flight left Kabul shortly after midnight Tuesday morning with the local time “there is a lot of sadness related to this departure,” he said with video connection to a Pentagon conference.
This ends the Americas war in Afghanistan after 20 years and the death of almost 2,500 American troops.
That means President Biden fulfilled his deadline on August 31st and that members of the American service are not at risk. He said the world expects the Taliban to keep their promise to allow free passage for those who want to leave.
The Republicans condemned a hasty departure that left Americans trapped in an enemy land. A former CIA paramilitary officer said: “Nothing feels right or right in this humiliating withdrawal”
State Secretary Antony Blinken said the job will continue to help 100,200 Americans who lag behind. The witnesses, however, said that the Taliban warriors fired guns in the air as word spread that the last flight had left. A Taliban spokesman declared victory and said the country “won full independence”.
