German security officials today said they have arrested more than 750 people and seized large quantities of drugs after deciphering secret correspondence through mobile phones.
The investigation began in April 2020 and is based on data obtained through communication by EncroChat service users who were involved in the illegal drug trade, the state prosecutor and Federal Criminal Service said in a statement.
State prosecutor Julia Busweiler told the Associated Press that French and Dutch investigators assisted in the investigation.
They managed to decipher the data and thus monitor the communication of criminals using coded mobile phones in EncroChat.
Investigators seized 3.2 tons of cannabis, about 200 pounds [320 kg] of synthetic drugs, more than 125,500 ecstasy tablets, nearly 400 kg] of cocaine, and 10 kilograms of heroin. 310 weapons, more than 12,200 bullets and property worth 168m euros were seized.
Busweiler said the investigation is not complete yet and that data from the conversation is being checked.
A lot of people are in custody. The data is being checked in order to determine whether they are enough to establish the indictment, “he said.
