On their joint visit to the two Balkan countries -- Kosovo and Serbia -- European Union emissary Mirsov Lajcak along with US Emissar for the Western Balkans Matthew Palmer decided to ask Serbia's religious leaders for an important political process through which he is aiming to resolve a deep dispute between [...]
The two diplomats did not do the same in Kosovo, and the EU does not even have answers to the lack of meeting with Islamic and Catholic leaders.
EU Foreign Policy and Security spokesman Peter Stano, in a response to the Klonkosova portal.tv showed no reason for such action, nor should support be taken for a political process by religious leaders.
“was a joint meeting of EU Special Representative Miroslav Lajcak and US envoy Matthew Palmer with the new leaders of the Serbian Orthodox Church to hear their views on the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and receive their support” was the EU's response.
The meeting was criticised days ago by policy scientist and Balkan affairs connoisseur Yasmin Mujanovic, who also called the promotion of religious institutions as political actors foolish.
This was really a terrible decision by all involved. Neither the EU nor the US should enter the business of promoting religious institutions as political actors. An extremely bad judgment by Lajcak and Palmer. This nonsense (so meeting with religious leaders to discuss v.j policy) was expected by Lajcak and the EU, but the Biden administration would have to know” better.
