Six months after the worst fighting in recent decades between Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenian banks, this week's border incident witnessed the fragility of Russia's mediated ceasefire, which stopped fighting in November last year.
Armenia has accused Azerbaijan of sending troops across the border. Azerbaijan has denied this charge and has said its forces have only protected their side of the border, Reuters writes, broadcast Gazeta Express.
A deal was reached that today the Azerbaijann Armed Forces must leave Armenian territory. This agreement has been partially fulfilled. There are territories from which the Azers actually left, but after the agreement was not completely completed, today I have contacted Russia's president for military assistance”, said Armenian Prime Minister in charge, Nicole Passinian.
Through a statement about this call, the Kremlin said Putin told Pasinian that the ceasefire agreement must be implemented strictly.
After reaching the ceasefire last year, Russia sent peacekeeping troops to oversee and implement the situation of calm. Russia has a military base in Armenia and strong ties to this state, but friendly reports also have with Azerbaijan.
