German Chancellor Angela Merkel today urged Russia to reduce its military presence in the border region with Ukraine in a telephone interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The two leaders spoke of “strengthening the Russian military presence in eastern Ukraine”, according to a statement by the German government, and “cancelarja demanded that these reinforcements be reduced with the aim of reducing tensions in the region”, reports ATS.
Kremlin, for his part, said in a statement that Putin and Merkel “are concerned about the escalation of” tensions in the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
The two leaders thus called for “for content and activism of the negotiations process”, according to Moscow, while peace talks that unite Ukraine and Russia, with the Franco-German mediation, are in a bind.
