During World Immunification Week, Luxembourg Government in Partnership with U NICEF will launch the new 1.5m-euro investment to strengthen health services for mother and child in Kosovo over the next two years. The partnership supports the expansion of the home visits programme implemented under the leadership of the Health Ministry, which aims to ensure the best start of life for all children and parents.

This is the expansion of the programme, which has successfully reached over 50,000 children in 27 municipalities over the past five years.

The goal of the partnership is to provide quality health and development services in early childhood for children who are most at risk and their parents by extending coverage with the visiting program to 38 municipalities by 2022; ensure that in each municipality, all pregnant women and children under the age of 2 accept a total of 7 home visits to support families in the first 1,000 days of a child's life; provided family education and family support and reference; and co-ordination with community support schemes, mainly to health, social well-being and education.

U n NICEF has been able to scale support for the Ministry of Health during the pandemic, including expanding advice and telemedicine services through home visits programme to 17,218 other children aged 0-3 and 2,063 pregnant women in all 27 municipalities.

In addition, the partnership has supported the resumption of the routine communication programme, organised door-to-door campaigns for immunisation for more marginalised children, and provided critical emergency support to the health system in response to COVID-19.

Some 5,000 health workers have been equipped with personal protective equipment, and 40 primary health care centers have been equipped with oxygen concentrations for patient treatment.

The new support will enable the support and consolidation of the critical programme to ensure the well-being of newborns and mothers during the ongoing pandemic and beyond.

U n NICEF, in co-operation with the international community and the Health Ministry, will bring 72,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine and 100,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine through COVAX during May and June 2021.
