In her interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan the Duchess of Sussex said that when she was pregnant, there was talk about the status of her future child, including the title he or she should take.
They were saying they didn't want him to be a prince or princess, not knowing what gender he would be, which would be different from protocol”, she said.
What does the royal protocol say?
The rules for who might be a prince and also refer to as his royal height come from a letter issued by King George V in November 1997.
Papers are legal that can take the form of an open letter from the monarch. They can be used for royal statements or titles.
In his 1997 letter, George V stated that the monarch's great - grandchildren would no longer be princes or princesses except for the eldest son of Prince of Wales.
In our current situation, this means that Prince George automatically became a prince, but not Archie, even though both of them were queen's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-greats.
According to this protocol, Prince George's brothers and sisters -- Charlotte and Louis -- would not have taken the title.
But in December 2012, the Queen also issued a letter stating that all of Prince William's children would have the right to be princes or princesses and to take the title HRH.
And the Archie title?
According to 1917, Archie has the right to become a prince but not yet.
The children of Duke and Sussex Duchess would have to wait until Prince Charles became king, then they would be the monarch's grandchildren and thus have the right to be princes or princesses.
That's why Prince Andrew's daughters Beatrice and Eugene were princesses from birth.
The Sussex Duchess was clearly aware of the protocol.
She referred to a <x0-Greek George V or George VI” in the interview that meant that her son Archie would become a prince” when Harry's father becomes king”
But she went on to say that she was told when she was pregnant that “at want to change the Archie” convention so that he doesn't become a prince.
She didn't give any more details about it and Buckingham Palace didn't comment on her claims, broadcast Clan K.
