A scandal has shocked the Christian Democrat Union, The CDU of Angela Merkel, in what is considered a key year with parliamentary elections scheduled to be held in September and the Chancellor preparing to withdraw after more than 15 years in the post.
This party's lawmaker, Nicholas Löbel, resigned and publicly apologized to his colleagues and citizens. His departure came after it was learned that its firm had won about 250 thousand euros from the sale of masks during the pandemic following recommendations made by the federal government and mediation among companies as part of an effort to encourage them to buy more masks.
This development could not come at a moment for delicate CDU; regional elections are held on Sunday in Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Wurttemberg, exactly where masks were sold. About a year ago, in the beginnings of the pandemic, their price was briefly a drastic increase, and then the politician should be one of those who benefited from such a situation. Local media say prosecutors have launched an investigation into the case.
A similar case is being investigated and another member of the ruling coalition, Georg Nüsley, who has left the parliamentary group only but refuses to give up the mandate in Bundestag.
