Court evidence from four ethnic Koreans and a Japanese woman show that they are asking for 700 thousand euros in damages from the Kim Jong-un regime.
While no one believes Kim will pay compensation even if ordered, the case is expected to highlight the misery of the thousands of people who went to live in the north as part of a proram developed by Red Cross states and funded by the Pyongyang, reports The Guardian, the Periscope.
We do not expect North Korea to accept the verdict or pay the damages,” said one of the individuals' lawyer.
In total, more than 90 thousand ethnic residents of Korea in Japan had gone to North Korea between 1959 and 1984.
The regime in Pyongyang, with the blessing of the then Japanese government, had promised ethnic Koreans a new life in the socialist paradise, with free education, free health care, and jobs and guaranteed housing.
Instead, they were forced to do manual work and to endure extremely difficult living conditions.
