Macron classified some of Turkey's actions as unacceptable “patic”, including its drilling-search activities near Cyprus that, according to him, “are not worthy of a large state”.
“We Europeans must be clear and determined not with Turkey as a nation and as a people, but with President Erdogan's government today committing unacceptable actions,” President Macron said at a press conference ahead of the South European summit.
Macron also said Europe should avoid a escalation of tension with Turkey, but stressed that Erdogan must clarify “ -- ” Turkish actions.
His comments come as tensions are on the rise in the eastern Mediterranean between Turkey and Greece, and the hot topic is likely to dominate the South European summit.
Tensions rose in the Mediterranean region after Ankara began exploration drilling for gas and oil in disputed waters between Crete and Cyprus.
Greece, in response, has declared it plans to expand its territorial waters from six to 12 nautical miles in response to the current crisis.
Macron said Europe should clearly show its “red line” and force itself to resolve the crisis.
