White House adviser Jared Kouchner said on Monday it would be in Saudi Arabia's interest to normalise ties with Israel, as did the United Arab Emirates.
This would also weaken the influence in the region of their common enemy Iran, Kouchner told reporters during a telephone conference, the AFP reports.
The “would be very good for Saudi business, it would be very good for protection of Saudis, and, frankly, I think it would also help the Palestinian people”, Kouchner said.
Saudi Arabia, the largest economy of the Arab world, has been silent after US President Donald Trump's surprise announcement last Thursday that the United Arab Emirates and Israel had decided to normalise relations.
Israel has agreed to suspend the annexation of occupied West Coast territories, though Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the plan was not out of the table in the long term.
King Saudi Salman and his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, had repeatedly expressed their desire for an independent Palestinian state with economic opportunities, Kouchner said.
“essentially, what they have said is that they want to see that Palestinians have a state and economic opportunity”, said Kouchner, who is also the architect of the American Middle East peace plan.
The historic agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel is the third such agreement Israel has reached with an Arab country. It has raised hopes for agreements similar to other pro-Western Gulf states.
