Pristina municipality temporarily lifts tax payment as condition to register cars

Pristina Mayor Shpend Ahmeti has announced that from Friday to August 31st, citizens will not be conditioned for registering cars to pay taxes on property.

Because of the pandemic, this condition is causing long-term tolls and ranks in front of the municipality and complaints of citizens. The possibility of online property tax has been in place for a while, but citizens are not using it”, Ahmeti wrote in his clarification.

Starting tomorrow and August 31st, we are suspending the payment of property taxes to pay the street tax for car registration in our municipality.

Explain below:

1. When you record your car, you pay your traffic taxes at the central level and in the municipality where you record your car. The road tax in the Pristina municipality is 10 euros.

2. To pay the road tax, from 2011 and based on the Property Tax management directive, you have to pay taxes on property so that you can pay the road tax. This has been and continues to be the most efficient way to collect property tax, which is an important part of our municipality (approximately 10m euros a year)

3. Because of the pandemic, this condition is causing widespread and long queues in front of the municipality and citizens' complaints. The possibility of online property tax has been there for a while, but citizens are not using it.

4. To avoid the ranks and to avoid waiting until further simplification of payments to this condition, we are suspending this condition until August 31st, when we will evaluate it again. We have to do this every month to make sure the budget isn't getting too bad.

5. Despite the removal of the condition, property tax remains a duty that citizens with property have. So you have to pay this by law and it won't go away. Even the traffic tax doesn't go off, but now it's easier and we're hoping that you can pay it in all the licensed payment institutions.
