Lionel Messy's words after breaking World Cup goals record

Lionel Messi was the lead protagonist in Argentina's 2-0 victory over Austria, marking two goals and becoming the best goalist in World Cup history with 18 goals.
After the match, the Argentinian captain expressed happiness in the victory and early qualifications of “Albiceleste” in the preliminary phase.
And we knew it wouldn't be easy. In the World Cup, there are no easy opponents, and every match is very struggling. Austria made it difficult for us, and in some moments it was difficult for us to control the game, but the most important was victory and qualification”, Messy said.
The 39-year-old star admitted that the loss of the penalty at the start of the match had disappointed him, but was happy he reacted in the best way possible.
I was very upset that I lost my penalty, but fortunately we were able to change the course of the match and get the three points. That's what matters the most”, he said.
Messi also highlighted the positive atmosphere within the Argentina team.
When we meet with the national team, we always enjoy playing together and giving fans joy. We will proceed step by step, because the road is still long and very difficult”, he added.
With two goals against Austria, Messi reached the quota of five goals at the 2026 World Cup and tops the tournament's goals list.
I never imagined such a departure. I'm tired of the effort, but very happy for the outcome and the contribution of the whole team. Now we have to keep up with the same commitment”, captain Argentina concluded.
Thanks to Austria's victory, Argentina secured the qualifications in the 1/16th round of the final by six points from two matches, confirming the status of one of the top favourites for the 2026 World Cup triumph.
