This time, only 10,000 pilgrims are expected, compared with about two million generally.
The vast majority of believers go to Mecca and Medina usually from outside Saudi Arabia, but this year the only foreigners allowed to participate are those who reside in the kingdom.
Those who began performing Haxhi underwent temperature checks and coronary tests, reports the AFP news agency.
Worshipers will also have to stay in quarantine before and after Hagi. Keeping the mask will be mandatory anytime.
Pilgrim Affairs Minister Mohammed Saleh Binten said pilgrims were quarantined in their homes and also four days have stayed in quarantine at hotels in Mecca.
The Kingdom has recorded more than 270,000 cases of nearly 3,000 deaths, one of the largest spread of pandemic in the Middle East.
