The former Real Madrid striker has been arrested and questioned by police about his role in a cocaine smuggling operation. Edwin Congo was among 18 people arrested after Spain's National Police seized a ton of cocaine, which was being smuggled between layers of fruit boxes. “18 people have been arrested and a ton of cocaine hidden in the cartons of secuested fruit has been caught, thanks to an international macro-operation led by National Police”, a public statement reads.

The 43-year-old was questioned by police in Madrid and later released. The ex-attack arrived in Spain in 1999, when he joined Real Madrid for 5m euros, which made him the most expensive Colombian transfer in history at the time. However, Congo failed to impose on “Bennabeu” and never played an official match with white people, spending time borrowing at Real Waldolid, Vittoria Guimarees (Potuga) and Toulouse (France).

In 2002, Congo joined Levante, where he spent four seasons before the subsequent transfers of Sporting Gijon and Recreto de Huelva. Internationally, Congo has played 17 matches with Colombia, as part of “Cover America” in 1999 and 2004. Speaking of Spanish television program “El Chiringuito”, where he appeared Tuesday evening, he claimed innocence: I'm calm, though it's not a comfortable situation. The police asked me a series of questions and then I returned home. They showed me pictures of people I had contact with.

The police told me I had to stay away from people who aren't good for me. I have to do things another way. They asked me if I was related to cocaine trafficking. I have nothing to do with it. Yeah, I do business with one of the people in the picture, but we're dealing with emeralds. I'm cool because I don't do cocaine. I'm innocent, I have nothing to do with selling, producing or whatever it is to do with cocaine”.
