German Bundestag MP Peter Beyer has said he feels ashamed that the European Union has not yet removed visas for Kosovars. The rapporteur for Kosovo on the Council of Europe said visa liberalisation for Kosovo has been delayed, and because of EU member states.
Peter Beyer, who is part of the German CDU and is known as Chancellor Angela Merkel's political ally, said the blame for not lifting visas for Kosovo falls to individual EU member states.
Visa liberalisation has been delayed. I feel ashamed that the European Union has not acted in this context. There can be no further excuses from EU member states separately, if we don't want to throw our credibility completely”, Beyer said in an interview for Gazette Express.
However, the rapporteur for Kosovo in the EC said there is good will for visa liberalisation for Kosovo to happen.
But I also know there is a lot of goodwill that finally becomes possible free movement for Kosovo citizens”, he said.
On the other hand, the German MP, commenting on the political crisis in Kosovo, said Kosovo political leaders would be led by reason and accountability in the situation in which the country is in.
Beyer said that unrest should not occur in Kosovo on the streets or in parliament as in the past, but the political, constitutional and pandemic crisis should be managed by those in the country's leadership positions.
The current political and constitutional criteria in Kosovo come at a time when the world is hit hard by a global pandemic, resulting in great difficulties for citizens of a small and poor country but a proud country. I am still sure that political actors will understand the signals and are guided by reason and accountability. There should be no riots in the streets or in parliament as seen in the past. People are suffering and need perspective for the three crises to be managed by those in the country's leading positions”, he said.
