Donald Trump spoke by phone with a senior Taliban official at the time of the prisoner's exchange, and when a major outbreak of violence was jeopardising the peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban that was signed on Saturday.
The conversation between Trump and the head of the Taliban's political office, Abdul Ghana Baradar, was the first direct conversation between an American president and a Taliban rebel leader since the US military intervention in Afghanistan in 2001, writes The Guardian, translates Periscope.
The Taliban said the phone call between Washington and Dohas [where the Taliban negotiator team has the office] lasted 35 minutes and claimed that Trump had told Baradari: “You are strong people and you have a great state and I understand you are fighting for your homeland. We've been there for 19 years and this is a very long time and the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan is now in everyone's interest. ”
Trump confirmed the phone conversation but provided some details about the man he wrongly named “rider of the Taliban”.
We had a good conversation. We agreed there would be no violence. We don't want violence. We'll see what happens,” has told Trump reporters. We actually had a very good conversation with the Taliban leader. ”
“I have a very good relationship with mula,” he added later.
The US signed two agreements Saturday: one with the Taliban, offering full withdrawal of foreign troops within 14 months if the rebels participated in peaceful domestic talks after which they would read a joint statement with the Afghan government. /Periscope
