Outgoing Minister of Slovakia Foreign Affairs Miroslav Lajcak will be the European Union's special envoy for negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina for resolving the Kosovo issue, Blic” has announced through diplomatic sources in Berlin.
Lajcak in that position will come with proposals from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who, according to “Blic”, thus reinforces her engagement in the Balkans.
“It is now official that the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo have been announced that Lajcak will lead the talks”, said by sources of “Blic”. However, the Serbian daily has received no confirmation of Lajcak's appointment by Serbia's president's cabinet, Aleksandar Vuciq.
Lajcak, however, is Berlin's choice, which is not rejected by Russia as having completed the Moscow State Institute for International Relations, writes “Blic”, broadcasts news.net.
He is a good connoisseur of the Balkans and an experienced politician and has already carried out many important functions on the ground, has been a special EU representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2006 to 2009, working in the European Service for Foreign Affairs, speaks the language understood by the region and has the necessary experience.
“Blic” writes that Serbia's leaders do not have much reason to be satisfied with its solution, even though Lajcak comes from a state that has not recognised Kosovo's independence and he will do everything in his power to reason the confidence given to him by Germany's recommendation, so he is expected to fight even more to protect Kosovo's independence.
Germany's engagement in talks between Belgrade and Pristina was expected, while several times even by Serbian President Vuciq.
