Christoph Heusgen is a German diplomat who has served as Germany's ambassador to the United Nations in New York since July 2017. He was Deputy Secretary for Foreign Policy and Security in the German Chancellorship from 2005 to 2017.
He is considered the most influential adviser by Chancellor Angela Merkel for foreign policy.
In 2005, Heusgen was elected Deputy Secretary for Foreign Policy and Security in the German Chancellor. In this quality, he has served as the main adviser for Foreign Policy and Security near Chancellor Angela Merkel. At the end of his term, he became the largest official in this position.
In November 2016 it was announced that Heusgen will succeed Harald Brown as Germany's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York City in 2017.
