As the number of cases affected by coronavirus dramatically increases in China, a senior scientist of infectious disease warns that things can get worse.
Two thirds of the world's population could capture it, Bloomberg reports, broadcast Telegragraphy.
So says Ira Longin, an adviser to the World Health Organization who tracked studies on the transmitability of the virus in China. The assessment implies that there may eventually be billions more infections than the current official number of about 60,000.
If the virus spread elsewhere to that extent, it will show the limits of the strict measures of control of China, including quarantine areas inhabited by tens of millions of people.
The quarantines could slow down the spread, but the virus had the opportunity to roam in China and beyond before entering into force, Longin said. The number of infected people increased by nearly 15,000 on Thursday after expanding diagnostic methods.
Longin's design is based on data that each infected person normally transmits the disease to two to three others.
