Serbia unlikely theoretically: MP Kamberi talks about Vuciki's threats to war, Special Court

Perhaps for the first time in history, Kosovo Albanians were listening to an inspiring speech in the Parliament of Serbia (National Assembly). MP Shaip Kamberi was denouncing the policy of the regime of Aleksandar Vuciqi by not getting caught the way it could have been expected in purely identity politics. Instead, he denounced [...]

Searching for “Google” for the name of Shaip Camber, the first suggestion that appears there is “Shaip Kamberi speech” This points to the extraordinary popularity of his word.

The 56-year-old from Trnovci in an exclusive interview for Periscope has answered some important questions related to recent political developments in Kosovo.

He has voiced conviction that the court process in The Hague against KLA leaders will prove and prove their innocence and the war for freedom.

Likewise, Kamberi has continued to denounce Serbia for not doing enough to condemn war crimes committed in Kosovo. He says compromise with Kosovo cannot happen until Serbia takes responsibility for what happened.

After the open threats from Serbian President Vuciq, Periscopi asked Mr. Kamberi if Kosovo was endangered by any military aggression in Serbia while his response is significant again.

The following is the full interview conducted by journalist Besarat Hoti:

Periscope:

Mr. Kamberi, four of the leading KLA leaders, are charged in The Hague with war crimes and crimes against humanity. How did you comment?

Shaip Kamberi:

First, the Special Court has been formed by the decision of the Republic of Kosovo and thus reflects the will to face the past. I believe, despite charges raised, this will not tarnish the pure fight of Albanians within the U. CK for the freedom of the people of Kosovo. I believe that the trial will ultimately prove this, and I hope that each accused can prove his innocence and the right struggle for freedom.

Periscope:

In Kosovo there is a widespread opinion that Serbia has not done enough to condemn war crimes committed by paramilitary forces in Kosovo. Do you support that?

Shaip Kamberi:

That is a fact; even 20 years after the war Serbia has not witnessed the will to face the crimes it committed in Kosovo on behalf of the Serbian people and state. Nobody is taking the liberty of speaking openly about these crimes, there is no will to reveal the mass graves in which the troops of Albanian civilians are found, and there is no will for apology, despite that in the official Serbian rhetoric, every day, we hear the flag that “wants compromise with Albanians”. This compromise will not be possible until Serbia does not assume responsibility for what happened in Kosovo, both in the apartheid and war years.

Periscope:

According to you, has the International Community put enough pressure on Serbia's political class to condemn war crimes?

Shaip Kamberi:

What the international community has done with its mediation in the Pristina-Belgrade dialogue, despite some signed agreements, is not enough to force Serbia sincerely to face its violent past in Kosovo. I find that the new US administration will be more persistent that this dialogue started to end with mutual recognition agreements.

Periscope:

Do you think Kosovo is threatened by any new military aggression from Serbia if there is potentially a deterioration of political circumstances in this country?

Shaip Kamberi:

We are witnessing that Serbian rhetoric in recent weeks is becoming even more harsh with open or figurative threats to a war with Kosovo. No doubt these statements, which come from both ultra-nationalist and top state officials, are disturbing, although in reality, Serbia has no theoretical likelihood of an intervention in Kosovo. She has signed the Kumanovo Agreement with which she has agreed that even her last soldier and policeman leave Kosovo, she knows that Kosovo's territorial integrity preserves KFOR, and a military intervention against Kosovo implies a new war with NATO. Some military planes purchased by Russia, or the claims to buy will from Turkey, do not make Serbia more competitive in fighting NATO. This should be added to the fact that Kosovo is no longer 1999 and that Albania is a NATO member.

Whatever the case, such Serbian rhetoric is a serious obstacle to expecting progress in the upcoming talks.
