Krasniqi: Unreasonable call for suspension of dialogue, elections will produce stable Government

Dialogue with Serbia has reason to stop even after the charges filed by the Special Court, estimates Albert Krasniqi, director of programmes in Democracy Plus. He in an interview for Online Economy, says representation in dialogue is a government duty. Following the establishment of charges by the Special Court, for former President Hashim Thaci and other top political figures in Kosovo, such as Kadri Veselin, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi, were asked to stop dialogue with Serbia. One such request came from the AAK, which is part of the ruling coalition, which Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti refused to accept from the LDK.

The dialogue has also requested Vjosa Osmani, the Speaker of the Parliament and the President's U.D.

But Krasniqi says that while there is a government and there are enough votes to ratify an eventual agreement there is no reason for a suspension of dialogue just because the Special Court has started work.

“I don't see reason to interrupt dialogue as long as we have a government which is tasked with representing the country in foreign policy and has the necessary votes in the Parliament then to ratify an agreement if it is to be reached. If those two preconditions exist, then I don't see it necessary to interrupt the dialogue just because the Special Court has started working and why the country has no elected president, despite having a president's U.d., because the president's role in the dialogue is very limited and they lead Prime Minister”, Krasniqi has said.

He has indicated that any suspension, but also what has happened in the past, is negatively affecting reaching a possible final agreement.

According to him, the ruling coalition will have difficulty functioning even after the AKR's warning of exit from the coalition. Krasniqi, who is a good connoisseur of political issues and the functioning of parties, does not believe the new elections could produce a more stable government than this.

The “is not that the elections have brought another coalition and will be more stable and will be able to make a rule different from what we have seen so far, in terms of governing stability and pushing forward to the constitution or initiatives that this government may have. But when you can't hold a coalition any longer, it seems to be the fate of this coalition, because we have an AKR warning that is now the opposition. I see it very difficult to continue with even minimal compromises that may be among the ruling coalition partners, and let alone the topics that require broader concessions such as the president's election, which seems to lead to early elections”, he said.

As for the possibility of going to early elections, he says he does not see the right moment, given the situation with pandemic, the dialogue process and the Special Court.

Even political parties do not, according to him, immediately.

“I am not looking for a moment to go to the polls, whether the situation with the pandemic, the Special Court, dialogue with Serbia that is in another dynamic, and political parties themselves are not well-consolidated. The LDK does not allow going to the polls due to Vjosa Osmani's appearance, but also having the post of prime minister. The PDK, which does not have a leader, most citizens vote for the leader, not for the political subject, and without a central figure, will find it difficult to garner votes. The AAK is not that it enjoys great popularity and that there may be contractions compared to these choices. Exclude the Vetevendosje Movement here, which even in the polls turns out to be a greater number of MPs currently present, but it is not a difficult moment to get the country into this situation because there are great responsibilities and difficulties to find a stable partner for governance”, he said.

Following Hashim Thaci's resignation from the presidential post, early elections are seen as possible, seeing not stability in the ruling coalition.
