Protesters burned the portrait of French President Emmanuel Makron, who has defended the publishing of the cartoons of the prophet Muhammad.
Bangladesh police did not allow protesters to reach the site where the French Embassy was headed, writes the BBC.
Authorities said about 40,000 people participated in the protest organised by the party “Islami Andolan Bangladesh”, which is among the largest Islamic parties in the state of South Asia.
Protesters were heard cheering “box French products” and called for President Macro's punishment.
“Makron is one of the few leaders who worship the devil”, the party chairman who organised this protest, Atur Rahman, said in front of protesters. He called for the government to expel France's ambassador.
France is an enemy of Muslims. Those representing it are also our enemies”, said another leader of this group, Nassar Wooddin.
Police used razor wire to block a road about three miles [5 km] from the French Embassy, trying to prevent protesters from reaching important diplomatic buildings.
