The police hour will enter into force from Saturday and will last for at least four weeks, Macron said in a televised address Wednesday.
The state of emergency was also declared.
“Massat will stop people from visiting restaurants and making private house calls during evening and night”, Macron said.
He added that residents should have good reason to be outside their homes during the police hour.
Schools will remain open and people will be able to travel among the regions during the day.

Whoever violates the police watch will be fined 135 euros.
New Corleone cases were confirmed in France on Wednesday.
Since the beginning of the pandemic in March, this country has confirmed over 820,000 cases of coronary and over 33,000 victims.
