Milanovic has long been part of the Croatian political spectrum. He was born in 1966 and was prime minister of Croatia from 2011 to 2016. At the time, he led the Social Democrat Party(SDP), the centre-left party. He was a leader of the opposition twice, from 2007 to 2011, and for several months in 2016.
Milanovic began his career at Croatia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served as adviser to the Croatian Mission in the European Union and NATO and was assistant minister of foreign affairs for multilateral political issues.
In 2007, Milanovic was elected president of the SPD and formed the four-party centre-left coalition, which won a major majority in the 2011 parliamentary elections.
He became prime minister that year and led the country towards EU membership.
His cabinet brought changes to tax laws and launched a series of infrastructure projects. He is known as a supporter of LGBT community rights.
He served as prime minister until 2015. Milanovic said he would withdraw from politics after the surprising election defeat.
He began his career as a political adviser. The profession was also as adviser to Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.
In June 2019, he formalised the campaign for presidential elections in Croatia with the slogan “A president of character”. His program belonged to the centre left.
