Not even shifting the event to Saudi Arabia has made Rachel Dakar less dangerous. At the seventh stage comes sad news of the first victim in the new era of this race. It's the Portuguese pilot Paulo Goncalves, who competed with the Hero team engine, as he used to be Honda's pilot.
Second in the 2015 edition, Goncalves crashed into the 276th mile of the 7th stage, the first after a day's break. He was found unconscious because of a cardiac arrest, and despite the help he was given, he failed to survive.
His death was confirmed after being transported by helicopter to Layla Hospital by the ambulance.
Goncalves was participating for the 13th time in Rally Dakar, where he had debuted since 2006. After the 6th stage, the current edition held 46th place. Toby Price, the defending champion and third in his current classification, was among the first to come to his aid, losing more than an hour.
This is the first death, after five years, of a racer in the Rally Dakar. The last round dates back to 2015, when Polish motorcyclist Michigan Hernikm lost his life in dehydranation.
