16 convicts lost their lives, and five more were seriously injured after clashes between prisoners in a prison in Mexico. This serious event is considered one of the most violent acts in the prison system in the country since President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took office.
Violence erupted Tuesday afternoon at the regional social reintegration centre in the town of Cineiguilla, located west of the Zacatecas state. Local media reported that the clashes were triggered after a football match.
Public Security Minister Ishmael Camberos, through a press release, promised a broad investigation into this serious event, as at the moment of clashes between convicts of all prison staff was in charge of office. He did not comment on the causes of the clashes, but assured that the situation in prison is under control.
Four firearms and many knives were found following the raids that were then conducted in prison cells. More than 120 convicts were transferred to other prisons to avoid new clashes.
According to data, members of 5 criminal groups, including Gulf Cartel, Cartelin Sinalo and New Generave in Jalisco, are located in the Cieneguilla prison.
