On Sunday, cars will be banned in Milan, and local officials are also discussing the possibility of stopping smoking at bus stations, measures that are part of efforts to reduce high levels of pollution in the city.
Italy is one of Europe's most polluted countries, and dozens of towns and villages there have faced alarms from smog this month.
Residents and tourists will be forced to use only electric scooters on Sunday, while public transport will be possible only between 10:00am and 6pm. Fans will be allowed, however, to drive to San Siro Stadium to attend the AC Milan match with Hellas Verona.
The vehicle ban has been met, however, with criticism, including these and those of Raffaele Cattano, regional environmental adviser, who called it “green demagogi and short-term access to limited looks”.
Milan Mayor Beppe Sala has acknowledged and himself that the move does not solve the city's pollution problem over the long term. It was he who proposed at the beginning of the month stopping smoking in bus and tram stops as part of a broader plan to stop smoking in open areas until 2030. But Cataneo said cigarette smoke represents only 1.9 percent of environmentally polluting emissions.
