The acting leader of the German Social Democrat Party has resigned after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Manuela Schwesig from the Social Democratic Party says it is certain to be fully healed, but that she needs treatment and will not be able to attend any public meeting in the coming months.

Schwesig said on Tuesday she plans to give up her position in leading the centre-left, but that she will keep her second job as governor of German Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
