They spoke at a press conference at the conclusion of the meeting.
President Trump spoke of “an extraordinary unity”, while Mr. Macron said all sides “have managed to find meeting points”.
The French president said he hoped to have a meeting between President Trump and Iranian Hasan Rouhani in the coming weeks.
We agree that Iran should respect its nuclear obligations and have a responsible behaviour in the Gulf and work together. Iran should not have nuclear weapons and the situation there should not harm the stability of the region”, Mr. Macron said.
President Trump did not confirm whether there will be a meeting soon, but said if Iran changes position, the meeting was possible.
“We are not seeking leadership change (in Iran). This has not worked. We want them not to have nuclear weapons. And we can make it in a short time. And I really believe Iran can once again become a great country. I wish this could happen. But they shouldn't have nuclear weapons”.
Mr. Trump earlier dismissed rumours of possible tension between him and French President Emmanuel Macron after the French leader met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif on Sunday.
He said he had given Mr. Macron the go-ahead for Mr. Zarif's arrival, but at the French president's press conference, only that he had informed Mr. Trump.
President Trump expressed optimism before reporters even of possible trade deals with China, though he criticised China's trade practices.
“Maybe want or maybe don't want a deal but I think they want to reach a deal. I don't think they have a choice. And I don't say that as a threat. But they have no alternative”.
G-7 leaders have voiced concerns about the escalation of trade war between the United States and China.
Mr. Macron said he hopes the leaders will withdraw from a trade war.
On Monday, President Trump said China had contacted American trade officials, calling to return to the negotiating table.
We'll start very serious talks. Let's see how it's going to go, Mr. Trump said. /voa/
