According to a White House announcement, last week Mr. Trump had expressed his concern to Mr. Macron over the proposed digital service tax.
White House spokesman Jude Deere said Washington “is extremely disappointed by France's decision to pass a tax on digital services, at the expense of American companies and workers”.
France's unilateral move seems to target American innovation companies offering services in specific sectors of the economy.
President Trump has ordered an investigation into the planned tax. Last month, the US Trade Representative's office announced it will hold a hearing on 19 August concerning the investigation it is conducting. The situation could lead to new tariffs or other trade restrictions on the part of the US.
